Thanks Mr. French's Gr. 6 class

Randerson K-3 students enjoyed a Christmas puppet show by Mr. French's class.  The Grade 6's created a puppet stage and made sock puppets. They performed a festive play and the puppets led the kids in a Christmas sing-a-long. Fun was had by all!

Randerson Gr. 7 students reflect on The Cay by Theodore Taylor

The Cay

The Cay is a heart touching novel with great messages that can change your thought. It’s about a young boy named Phillip who lives during the Second World War.  While his father was transferred to work on the island of Curacao Phillips mother did not want to live there.  As the choice was made to leave Curacao due to the worry of soon being killed on Curacao Phillip and his mother left on a ship back to their home town in the United States in the town of Virginia. While on board of this boat they were soon attacked by the Germans. When getting onto a life boat Phillip got hit on the head and was unconscious. After finding out that he was on a small raft with a cat and a black man named Timothy. After the long days and nights Phillip soon learns to see that black people aren’t as bad as his mother always said and thought.  Each and every chapter something exciting happens and you never want to stop reading. The beginning is a little slow but TRUST me its a great read.  It’s a book I would definitely recommend and read again myself.

The Cay

The Cay is an action packed adventure book that leaves you hanging after every chapter.  This book takes place during world war two in the year 1942.  The main character in this novel is Phillip.  Phillip is originally from Virginia, U.S.A but later moved to the small island of Curacao in the Dutch West Indies. After his island was invaded by German submarines Phillip and his mother were forced onto to a boat travelling back to the United States.  Just a few days after they boarded the ship they got torpedoed by a German submarine.  While boarding life rafts, Phillip was knocked out by falling boards from the boat and fell into the water.  He was saved by Timothy that pulled him out of the water onto his raft.  They were lost at sea with no one in sight.  This novel can be a little slow at the beginning but trust me; you end up loving it at the end with maybe even a tear in your eye.

Thank you for sharing your reflections girls. It truly is a powerful story, timeless in its message of how love overcomes prejudice. Thanks for blogging.  Mrs. Martineau

Wonderful book summaries on The Cay, Grace and Carly! Your personal perspective will entice fellow students to read the book. Well done, girls! Mr. M.

Kurzweil, SmartBoards & IPads - A Great day of Learning & Sharing

Randerson staff had a great day of professional development, learning the ins and outs of Kurzweil.  We would like to thank Set BC's Maureen Lafleche who led us in an informative, hands-on, practical workshop that allowed us to gain experience, tools and ideas that we can use in the classroom tomorrow.

Along with Kurzweil we worked on iPad apps that engage students in the daily 5, increase accessibility to all students and improve math skills  . Other staff looked at apps for music, French and other curriculum areas.

New Books to Check Out

One of my favourite new books is called The Road to Afghanistan by Linda Granfield and Brian Deines.  This picture book tells the story of a soldier's experience in Afghanistan from the beauty of the landscape to the destruction of war. The soldier reflects on experiences in Afghanistan and connects those experiences to those of a great-grandfather in WWI and grandfather in WWII.  This well written book is a great way to bring the heavy topic of war to a younger audience.

New books to check out!
The Series 7 is a great new series that has captured the imaginations and intrigue of our Gr. 6/7 students.
  •  7 stories by 7 wonderful Canadian authors on 7 different adventures about 7 cousins
What has added to our connection with this series is that both John Wilson and Eric Walters have visited our school.  Their tales of how the stories came to be was great. That along with Eric's
dynamic discussion on his journey to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro was enough to have the books flying off the shelf.  I and the 13 students that were at book club all highly recommend this series.

The Mother - Daughter Book Club by Heather Vogel Frederick has been very popular among the Gr. 4-6 girls. New to our library is the rest of the series, Much Ado about Anne, Dear Pen Pal and Pies & Prejudice to name a few.

For our younger audience we have added a new set of Fancy Nancy stories by Jane O'Connor and four stories from the Mouse series by Lauren Thompson and Buket Erdogan.  For our young and older non-fiction readers we have the Crabtree Contact series which include Snake Bite, Air War, Alien Abduction, Bigfoot and Manga.

Gr. 6 & 7 Book Club The Seven Series

It was a full house for our book club today as we discussed The Series 7 by 7 great Canadian authors. Normally we have one book to discuss but with author John Wilson visiting us last May and author Eric Walters visiting us last month we opted for The Series 7.  Your ticket in the door was to have read one of the seven books.  Not surprisingly many of the students had read at least two from the series and some had read more.

All seven books were enjoyed by at least one of our book clubbers. We discussed the series as a whole and each book individually.  We looked at connections and differences between the books and the authors' writing styles.  We discussed how each authors' style brought out different aspects of the seven cousins.

Here's reviews by two students:
                                                               Review on 7 series
I read Close to The Heel and Between Haven and Earth!  It was very well thought of, of how there were 7 different authors and they all connect in some way.  I liked Close to the Heel more because it was funny and got interesting really quick!  I highly recommend the whole series and I definitely want to read them all!
 Jacob Grade 7

                                                          Review on Devil's Pass
It is an awesome engaging book with intense scenes.  I would highly recommend this to a friend. I would say this book is for kids with a grade level and maturity of about 5-7.  This is the boss book
and you have to read it if you enjoy funny stories with some combat scenes. Read more reviews for more information.
Branden (B Dog) Gr. 7

I was really proud of the depth of discussion our Gr. 6/7 students demonstrated. Their character knowledge, connections and inferences were excellent.

Thank you to our Gr. 6/7 students who took part in book club.  It was a dream discussion.

Author Eric Walters visits Randerson

Randerson Gr. 4-7 students and staff enjoyed a visit from Canadian author Eric Walters. Author of more than 90 books, Eric took us on a journey from his teaching days in the Peel School District of Toronto, where he penned his first novel, to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, where Between Heaven and Earth sprung to life.  Eric's enthusiasm for life, social justice, and the power of reading was prominent in his presentation.  Student's learned of how his books come to life through ideas, research, experiences, and involvement in his community. We saw pictures of Eric with two Siberian tigers at a school, walking/running the Sahara Dessert in an ultra marathon and fending off poisonous snakes, elephants and lions in Africa.  Eric brought us into his stories through his tales of adventure, his great visuals and his dynamic mannerism.

Creation of Hope is an orphanage in Kenya that Eric and his wife Anita began after a chance meeting with a young boy in Kikima, Kenya. He spoke of the important role we all play in becoming global citizens. He talked about how small acts of kindness go a long way and how respect begets respect.

Thank you Eric Walters for visiting Randerson.

* Remember our next book club is on October 30th where we will be discussing the Series 7 created by Eric Walters and written by Eric and six other Canadian authors.

Summer Reading

I just finished Mockingjay last night. After reading Hunger Games a few years ago my daughter has been encouraging me to finish the series. My first summer reads this year were Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Suzanne Collins knows how to write adventurous novels!

I thoroughly enjoyed Catching Fire with its twists and turns leading up to the Quarter Quell. Just when you think you've guessed the ending something new pops out to take the characters in a whole new direction.

Although I enjoyed the trilogy, my favourite in the series was Catching Fire. The characters grew in depth and we learned more about the districts absolute loathing of the Capitol.  I did find parts of Mockingjay a bit confusing as at times I wasn't sure if the characters were dreaming or experiencing the events.

Randerson kids and staff, don't forget to be taking those great 'get caught reading' photos.

June Book Club ~ Great Discussion, reflection, connections and of course yummy treats

An excited group of Gr. 5 and 6's gathered in the library at long recess today to discuss our book club choice of the month 'Out of My Mind' by Sharon Draper.  The conversation started with one student voicing her dislike of the ending, especially when Penny was injured in the car accident.  We all thought it was a surprising twist, that added hardship to a family that had been through so much. Of course the drama in these details kept us reading and wanting more.

Ayden said she has never read a book so fast and was sad when it was over as she still wanted more. Many agreed.  Everyone felt Melody was brave, smart and funny.  One student felt that Mr. Dimming was not the teacher that she would want because he didn't stand up to the meanies Claire and Molly, he didn't phone Melody's family when the plane was early and he was really mean saying "the test must be easy if Melody did well on it" .  We all didn't think he behaved well as a teacher nor as an adult.

Catherine and Mrs. V really began creating life-changing opportunities for Melody and found ways she could have a voice. We all loved these characters.

My favourite thing about today's book club was the non-stop chatter among the students about characters, feelings and comparisons to other characters in other stories.  I loved the empathy each student spoke of and the attention to detail they showed in their conversations.  Mercedes spoke of how she could relate to Melody's use of songs for inspiration and telling a story, even creating moods and describing songs as colours and temperatures. The discussion led to connections with Rules by Cynthia Lord and Wonder by R.J.Palacio.

I thank all our students who attended the book clubs throughout the year. I get so much out of our discussions. I look forward to many more book club discussions.  Remember if you want to discuss books this summer e-mail me or blog.

Happy Reading
Mrs. Martineau

I wonder? Connecting to Our World Through Inquiry

Randerson students are finishing up the year presenting answers to their I wonder questions.  Throughout the year we have worked on the power of strong questions, how the right question can create strong learning and discovery opportunities and how hard it is to come up with meaningful questions.

I'm pleased to see the wonderful, innovative, curious questions our students have come up with.
" I wonder how Jackie Robinson impacted my life today?"
" I wonder how Pink Shirt Day impacts me on a day to day basis?"
"I wonder why you can see the moon during the day?"
"I wonder what obstacles Audrey Hepburn had to overcome at the beginning of her career?"

From these questions, students researched, using skills developed over this year and past years including; use of databases, narrowing a google search, using webcat in our library to find the right books and subjects and asking questions collaboratively.   Students were also encouraged to interview members of the community to gain insight and understanding.  The strongest connections came when students interviewed family members.

A Gr. 5 student interviewed her 97-year-old Great Grandmother on clothing styles in her day vs. those today.

A Gr. 5 student interviewed her Dad and it turned into a family discussion on how he is passing his Chilean culture on to his children while living in Nanaimo.  This discussion led to the whole family coming up with ideas to celebrate and learn more about their Chilean heritage.  It truly was a powerful connecting opportunity.

Several students interviewed their coaches (hockey, fast-pitch, karate) on what it takes to be the best athlete they can be, what sacrifices are needed, what rewards are possible.  They spoke with their coaches about the coaches' experiences growing up in the sport.  This too connected the young athlete and coach at a greater level than prior to the interview.

Students are presenting their findings in the final weeks of class. We are seeing iMovies, Power Points, videos and artifacts brought in to best showcase their answers. We are learning how to hip-hop as taught by a Gr. 6 boy, how bubble-gum is made (complete with a recipe that was handed out) and how influenced Walt Disney was by his wife's opinions.

Students who may have been reluctant to present to an audience have made wonderful iMovies, complete with pictures, diagrams, voice-overs and details on the research they did. They have been happy to sit back with the class and watch their movie.  Response from their classmates has been phenomenal.

I have been inspired, encouraged and simply entertained by these wonderful inquiry projects by our talented students.

Thank you Randerson kids for making my job the best one in the world!   I applaud you!!!

Bookfest Authors visit Randerson

Randerson Ridge had the pleasure of hosting three Bookfest authors this week. Our K’s and 1’s got to do Yoga with Kathy Beliveau.  They loved playing the Yoga Game and especially liked the Lion Roar, the Cobra and the tree poses.
Our 2’s and 3’s were delighted by Maryann Kovalski’s talented drawings.  It was amazing how she told a story and drew the pictures as she went along. We learned that there is a drawing alphabet. (circle, square, rectangle, cube and triangle)

Our 3, 4’s and 5’s loved their interaction with David Ward. He captured their imaginations and thoroughly stoked their writing interests.  “It was so cool to hear him read from E.  A book he hasn’t even published yet. We might have been the first kids to hear it.” Gr. 4 student

Thank you to our wonderful guest authors for delighting and enriching our students. Thank you Bookfest organizers and volunteers for celebrating the joy of reading and writing each year with these wonderful Canadian authors.

Author Visit with John Wilson ~ A great afternoon

Randerson Division's 1-4 enjoyed a visit from author John Wilson this week.  John is an excellent storyteller sharing stories of his Dad's experiences growing up in India and going on wild boar and crocodile hunts. John shared how he got his ideas and how he bases all his stories on historical fiction.  We learned so much about his process of writing, where he gets his ideas from and how we can all be authors.  We enjoyed learning about the Series 7 written by seven Canadian authors. Our copies of all 7 books are in huge demand.  Today our Gr. 6's chose the Series 7 for our June book club. What a perfect choice!

Comments from our students included:
“I liked how funny and entertaining he was with his stories. “
“I liked how he told stories of his dad and showed us how we can become authors.”
“I have never read any of his books but now I want to.”
“I like how the 7 series is written by seven different authors and how John and Eric wrote their characters like they were talking to each other.”
“It was amazing. He can really tell a story.”

Thanks John for visiting Randerson

A Tale Dark and Grimm ~ April Book Club Choice

Our next book club choice is a bit scary so be warned!  A Tale Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz sees Hansel and Gretel weave through eight classic fairy tales...but these aren't your light hearted fairy tales...these are dark.

Recommended by our Grade 6 boys, A Tale Dark and Grimm takes a unique if not somewhat gruesome look at the adventures of Hansel and Gretel. This book is not for the faint of heart but it is a great read for those liking the darker side of fairy tales.

Book Club - 11:00-11:45 Wednesday April 24th in the library.  I'll be sure to have ghoulish snacks and look forward to your reviews.  We currently have 11 copies circulating so be sure to pop in and see me if you want to read this adventurous tale.

Dancing Through the Snow Book Club

Dancing Through The Snow.
I like this book because it gives a lot of emotional feelings.
My favourite charectar is Jess because she is soft hearted and king, always lets
people off and she always forgives people.  I would reccomend this book to ages nine or ten.
Book club was a great experience for me because we all got to share are feelings about this book.
I felt really sad in some parts because Min always got regected from her foster parents.  I loved when Min and Penny sang Where is love from Oliver.  I think that even though Min might not be the best singer she is always going to be a good singer because she tried.

By:Sarah

This month our book club read Dancing Through the Snow by Jean Little. We had 12 girls from grades 4-6 take part in our lunch hour discussion.  We discussed what it would be like for Min to go from foster home to foster home and how her trust grew by living with Jess.  The girls were chatty about character development saying Jean Little is very good and building strong characters, especially female characters.  Those participating loved the story and offered great reflections.

Some comments included:

The book was a great book and I want to red it again!  At first I felt sorry for Min but things got better.  I think it was funny when Min and her friends chased Laird the bully.  Gr. 4 student

I felt sorry for Min at First.  My favourite character is Jess because she has personality. I liked Maude because she had personality.  Gr. 4 student

I thought it was a good book out of what I read.  It is very interesting.  After the first couple of pages you just dive in!  I think it's beautiful.  The author used lots of good ways to express the characters thoughts and feelings.  My favourite would be Jess Hart.  Overall of what I read so far, it's awesome!  Gr. 6 student

I think that Min at first is quite left out until she meets Jess.  I also think that Jess is very kind hearted person, always willing to help and soft hearted.  I think Toby is a funny, intelligent person.  He is very brave & loves dogs.  Gr. 4 student

Dancing through the Snow

I thought dancing through the snow was a really cool book. In the beginning it was sad because Min was dropped off at childrens aid for the fourth time. Then a docter that she had met before took her in. Now she has a injured dog. I am not finished the book but i am exited to finish it.

Learning with Laptops @ Randerson

For the past two months students at Randerson have been working on laptops as part of the #SD68 technology initiative.

Ms. Burnham's Gr. 3 students are using World Book Online Kids to research structures in science.

Mr. Rosenau and Mrs. Aitken's classes are using World Book Online Student as they research West Coast First Nation Peoples.

Students are learning how to take notes from webpages including taking key facts from each passage without copy and pasting the paragraph.  They are creating wonderfully descriptive paragraphs using their own words, connections and ideas. They are also learning how and why to cite their work.

Grade 5 students in Mr. Nixon's class have become experts at Webcat finding fiction, non-fiction and specialty resources.  They are also becoming more independent learners by searching what books they have out and when they are due.

Mr. MacKinlay's Gr. 6 class is using http://www.tagxedo.com to create word collages based on their novels. Today's lesson was student lead with one boy showing the class, including me, how to create a word design.

Mrs. Radcliffe's Gr. 7's are working on the laptops for their Ancient Egypt Inquiry project.  Our most recent lesson focused on website citations.  I've been impressed with that attention to detail the Gr. 7's are demonstrating in creating their reference lists.

Book Club ~ January Conspiracy 365

Students discussing the book and writing reflections
Our first book club of 2013 was appropriately January Conspiracy 365 by Gabrielle Lord.  Twelve students gathered in the library over long recess, enjoying snacks of veggies, fruit and cupcakes. The energy and excitement felt by the students could match that of lead character Callum Ormond as the discussion focused on motive, possible clues and details to consider.

Students unanimously voted the book as one of their top reads, with excitement and suspense pulling them in. Many students have read well beyond January some are as far as November.
Yummy snacks!

One Gr. 5 boy said "I'm a bit sad I'm on November because that means I'm almost finished the series and I don't want it to end."

CSI

CSI
When Mrs. Radcliffe told us we were going to be doing a CSI unit with Mrs. Thorsen, I was so excited. Mrs. Thorsen had some really awesome stations to figure out the crime. My favorite station was the brown stain station because you got to test out something that I would have never thought to test because it was such a small item. It was also fun because I got to learn how to properly compare two things that could mean the difference between guilty and not guilty. My favorite part of the whole CSI unit was at the end, when we did the court scene. I liked it because I got to be Vera Cruise, (one of the suspects). The court scene was supposed to be serious, but I thought Sophie was a really good, but hilarious judge, so I couldn’t stop laughing.
Over all, I loved the CSI unit.

CSI

I thoroughly enjoyed the CSI unit that we had in our classroom. I loved every part of this unit from learning about witnessing things to the court case. I also really enjoyed working in a group because I didn’t just have my own opinion but I had other people’s too.
I liked the crime scene investigation on the evidence that was found. My favorite station was the one that we got the burn wool and cotton, to find out what the mystery string was.
The hardest part of this course was finding out who committed the crime, but that was all sorted out when we had our court case! The court case was excellent because it was very realistic, and it was also really funny. Over all, I had lots of fun, and I would definitely do this again!

I thought that the CSI unit was really fun.  My favorite part was the station that we got to burn cotton and wool.  I liked that station because I had never heard about testing string to help determine a murderer.  The station I found the most confusing was the chemist station.  My favorite part of the first day of CSI was looking at the six differences pictures.  Overall I thought it was a really fun and well put together unit.  I was also very surprised with who was convicted for the murdered.

CSI Repost - Steven Grade 7

The CSI report an amazing experince! I loved all the aspects of the crime scene. I enjoyed the court most because we got to feel how a court was layed out. The crime scene is about a millionare that went missing but no one but for his four friends knew who did it. We were seprated into groups and we got to go the crime scene setup in the libary. We had to look at all the detail in the libary to solve the mystery. Overall I loved the CSI unit we did.

First book of 2013 - Dancing Through The Snow

Happy New Year Randerson students, staff and parents. I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow and hearing about your holidays and all the great books you've read :)

I just finished Jean Little's Dancing Through the Snow. I look forward to our February book club where we will chat about it in detail.  It's a book that catches you right from the start as you follow Min, a grade 5 girl who travels from one foster family to another, searching for a family.  It isn't until she is basically abandoned just a few days before Christmas that her life begins to change.  I don't want to give away too much as there are suprises early on.  I just want to recommend this book to
Gr. 4,5 and 6 students.

February Book Club
