Final clues for Who Am I?  

Cllue #3 ~ Although I now call New York home and I travel the world playing jazz music, one my favourite places to return to is my home in Nanoose Bay with my husband Elvis and two boys.

Clue #2 ~  I have lived all over North America from Nanaimo to Boston to LA to New York.  I love Vancouver Island and always enjoy my visits home. I have won 2 Grammys. 

Clue #1 ~  I was born in 1964 in Nanaimo and grew up in a very musical family.  I attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston.

Mystery clue #4      Who am I?  I was a developer in the city.  Did you know all parks on Protection Island have pirate themed names.  That's because of me.

Family Literacy Week

Many students are now coming in with the correct answers to Who Am I? 
Today Gr. 4 students Khushi and Isha came in to school early and looked up the answer.  Yeah!!!  They got to put their name in the draw. 

Grade 2 student Rylee made 3 recipies from the Star Wars cookbook.  Yum Yum! 

We now have more than 30 students entered in the draws.  I'm looking forward to tomorrow where I know a lot more forms will be coming in. 
Tomorrow's the big draw.  It's great to see all the enthusiasm and lots of entries coming in. 

More winners today :) as we celebrate Family Literacy Week

Today, grade 2 student Zoe gave a wonderful book share to her class. 

She is reading The Trenches from the "My Story: series about WW1.  She is reading it with her Papa and he is telling her great stories about life overseas and about the military.  Zoe is enjoying sharing this book with her Papa.  For such a great book share during family literacy week Zoe won a 'spot' prize and got her name in the draw for the grand prizes.

Catherine and Jacob both Gr. 5 students and Sarah in Gr. 3 also came up with the Who Am I answers and are entered into the draw. 

Emma (gr. 2) and Alexis (gr. 3) cooked with their mom and each earned a ticket to the draw. 

Erik (gr.4) read with his parents and is now in for the draw.

Many more students shared their Family Literacy week experiences with us during library classess today.  Way to go Randerson!  Keep up the great reading and learning.

Celebrate Family Literacy Week Jan. 23-27th

This week is Family Literacy Week.  It's a great time to celebrate literacy through everyday activities we do at home. 

Mrs. Martineau's family (my parents and my children) playing the board game Qwirkel

 Families play a huge role in developing literacy skills with our students.  Be sure to take part in some of the activities, take a picture and bring it into the library.  I will put up all the pictures to celebrate learning together. 

Some ideas for fun with family literacy include:

• Baking a recipe together
• playing a card game or board game
• reading the signs on the street en route to an activity
• taking 20 minutes to have  family 'free reading' time
• reading a story together no matter how old you are :)
• creating a 'to do' list together
• working on a 'kids budget'
• reading food packages to determine 'healthy living' ingredients

Be sure to enjoy some family literacy time this week, drop off a picture or write me a note about what you have done and your name will go into the draw for a prize.

We are also continuing with our mystery person clues.  So far no one has figured out 'Who am I'.  Search for the answer with your family and write it down.  Drop your answer off in the library for the chance to win a prize.  Here are the clues.  Each day I add one more clue.

Video book review part 2

Here our video book reviewers MKT take a look at books they haven't enjoyed as much.  Like all reviews they are based on opinion and although I personally liked some of the books MKT did not, I appreciated their reasoning for their choices. 

This is Meta Knight, due to some factors of books not being "bad" we are just here to say these aren't our kind of books and are slow.

It's a very snowy day ~ our grade 2's reflect on all this snow :)

 Our grade 2's were so excited about all the snow we wanted to celebrate our thoughts and feelings about it.

A lot of snow fell in Nanaimo today.  Here's what our school looked like.



Tyler:  I love throwing snowballs, but not at school.  I'm so happy its snowing :)

Wyler:  The snow is so deep that when I went to walk to school I had to drag my feet. 

MacKenzie: I like to make snowman and snowballs.  I liked the Biggest Snowman Ever story we just read. Snow is the best cause I threw it at my face.  :)

Emily: I love snow. I'm sooooooo excited about all this snow.  It's very snowy and drive safe ~ thank you.

Elise:  I was walking to school today and almost fell over because the snow was soooo deep.  I walked half way then my mom came and picked me up.

Nyah: I love the snow!  It is the best!  It is fabulous!

Emma:  I feel really nice when I have snow in my yard. Sometimes I get blocked in and I know its snowing because its so bright out.  I love to sled.

Jake:  I like the snow because Tyler made me dunk my head in it and that was AWESOME!

Kai:  I like the snow because me and my sister went to the park and went sledding and because I go sledding with my family every year.

Gr. 3 reflections:

Sarah: I love snow very much!  My friends and I are going to build a snowman and are going sledding at recess.  I love snow and so should you.

Alexis:  I love the snow.  My sister and I like to go sledding every time it snows.  We like to build snowmen in our backyard. 

Tyson:  Snow is Awesome!  I'm going to go snowboarding this year. 

Dylan:  I like going sledding and building snowman and sometimes I throw snowballs with my friends BUT not at school.

Celebrating Family Literacy Day ~ Jan. 27, 2012

Friday January 27th, is family literacy day across Canada.  Since 1999 Canadians have been celebrating the important role family plays in raising strong readers.  Whether it making a recipe together, playing a game of cards, or reading the street signs on the way to an afterschool activity, there are lots of ways you can incorporate literacy into your lives and have fun doing it. 

Randerson students and staff will be celebrating Family Literacy Day by teaming up with our buddy classes to enjoy a good book. 

Throughout the week I will be posting clues or asking questions on the blog and in the library for anyone who wants to take part to solve the mystery or answer the question.  I look forward or your visits. Be sure to not only read the clue but pay attention to words that are italicized  for extra hints.

Hunger Games Book Club January 27th 11:00 AM @ the Library

Gr. 6/7's I've been so excited to hear how many of  you are reading this month's book club choice.  I spent the weekend reading it and couldn't put it down. I think I went to bed after 3:00 AM Sat night unable to rest until it was done.  I'm so looking forward to discussing this book with  you.
